New genealogical information about the Ortiz family of New Mexico is the subject of a seventeen-page article, “Ortiz Family Genealogical Research and New Records for the Ortiz Family of Mexico City,” (El Farolito, Vol. 8. No. 4. 2005L: quarterly journal of the Olibama López Tushar Hispanic Legacy Research Center).
The first part of this article provides background regarding the efforts of key researchers who contributed significantly to compiling a well-documented genealogy and history of the Ortiz family of Mexico City and New Mexico. The second part of this article provides new genealogical information on the early generations of the Ortiz family that lived in Mexico City during the 1600s, including important leads concerning the Ladrón de Guevara relatives. This new information extends the genealogy presented in The Spanish Recolonization of New Mexico, co-authored by John B. Colligan and José Antonio Esquibel. Here is an excerpt from the article:
Nicolás Ortiz de León and doña Antonia Ladrón de Guevara were the parents of at least thirteen children born in Mexico City between 1639 and 1664. The names of seven of these children were presented in The Spanish Recolonization of New Mexico, and that information was based on marriage records that were extracted for these individuals. The baptismal records for twelve of their children were more recently extracted, including that of their second known son, Nicolás Ortiz Ladrón de Guevara, who settled New Mexico with his family in 1694. He was baptized on September 29, 1640, Santa Vera Cruz Church, Mexico City, and his padrinos were Luis Abessi (or Abessil) and María Pérez.
Doña Antonia’s surname is recorded as Guevara in ten of the twelve baptismal records extracted (1639, 1640, 1642, 1646, 1650, 1651, 1655, 1656, 1661, and 1664). In one record her surname is given as Ladrón de Guevara (1648) and in another record, the baptismal record for Josefa Ortiz, it is recorded as ‘de Islas.’ Although this could have been an error on the part of the individual who recorded the event, perhaps the recorder was privy to personal information about doña Antonia and her family. This record may offer a possible clue to the identity of the paternal family of doña Antonia Ladrón de Guevara, who was a natural daughter of doña María Ladrón de Guevara.
The new information in this article will assist interested people in becoming familiar with the genealogy of the earlier generations of the Ortiz family of Mexico City in order to continue to extend this family’s genealogy and to possibly uncover historical documents pertaining to the members of this family. Most likely there are documents in the archives of Mexico relating to any one or more of the members of the Ortiz family of Mexico City, documents that contain any amount of valuable genealogical and/or historical information to assist in understanding this background and experiences of this family.
