On the road to statehood, the creation of counties out of vast tracts of territory signaled a preference for the American system of governance. In an area with no prominent towns or commercial centers, the county seat played an important role. The courthouse took on high importance in the administration of justice, maintenance of a jail and place for the offices of county government. The courthouse’s placement and architectural design created an important symbol, reaffirming the power of the county and its link to a higher system of government.
