Juan Paez Hurtado
Juan Páez Hurtado was born on December 14, 1668 in Los Palacios y Villafranca, Spain. He was the son of Domingo Hurtado Vizcaino and Ana Josefa Rubio y Vasquez. In 1716, after the viceroy of Mexico had received complaints concerning the conduct of Governor Martinez, he ordered Captain Antonio Velerde y Cosio to proceed from El Paso to assume the governorship of New Mexico. He was also ordered to commence an investigation into the charges that had been brought against Martinez. Velarde y Cossio reached Santa Fe on December 9, 1716 and while he was received by Martinez, the latter refused to give up his office. Finally, on January 20, 1717, Governor Martinez, compelled by the viceroy’s order, went to Mexico. He left the government, however, in the hands of Captain Juan Paez Hurtado.
