John Miles

Born in Murfreesboro, Tenn., in 1885, Miles was elected governor of the State of New Mexico in 1938 and served two terms, from 1939-1942.

Born in Murfreesboro, Tenn., July 28, 1885; attended public and high schools of Tennessee; moved to New Mexico in 1906, and was in mercantile business for several years; county assessor, Quay County, N. Mex., 1920‑24; appointed secretary of New Mexico State Tax Commission, 1925; secretary of the Democratic State Central Committee, 1926‑28; elected Democratic State chairman, 1934, and reelected in 1936; elected Governor of New Mexico in 1938; reelected Governor in 1940. Died October 7, 1971.
