New Mexico’s Boxing Legacy


While New Mexicans know the names Johnny Tapia, Danny Romero and Holly Holm, few have heard of Benny Chavez, Eddie Mack or Benny Cordova. Few know that, in 1868, a five-hour bare-knuckle prize fight outside Santa Fe resulted in a death, or that, in 1896, the Territory of New Mexico played a huge role in a nationwide ban on prizefights.
