Thomas Benton Catron was a Missourian and Civil War veteran who came to New Mexico following the war seeking his fortune. He found it in the legal entanglements surrounding the Spanish and Mexican land grant claims in the courts.

Apparently quite the opportunist, he used his legal expertise to become the largest landowner in the new territory and went on to become one of New Mexico's first U.S. Senators in 1912.
