About Us
Office of the State Historian Internship Program

General Information:

As part of its mission to "foster and facilitate an understanding and appreciation of New Mexico history and culture," the Office of the State Historian (OSH) invites students to become a part of a dynamic public history program. An internship with Office of the State Historian is a pre-arranged, structured learning experience scheduled within a specific time frame. The experience must be relevant to the intern's academic and professional goals, and to research and programming conducted by OSH. An internship is performed under the direct supervision of OSH staff.

Internships may be arranged individually or with existing University Programs, as noted below. Information and applications may be obtained by contacting the appropriate University Internship Coordinator or by contacting the Office of the State Historian, the central referral service for internships. Refer to the listing below for deadlines, addresses and other specific information regarding the internship program.

Applicants are evaluated on a students academic standing; scholarly qualifications; experiences; the quality of the research project or study proposed and its suitability to the research needs of the Office of the State Historian in collaboration with University departments and programs.

Internships at the Office of the State Historian:

(1) Educational programming and Informational Services: To make information on New Mexico history accessible, all-inclusive, and meaningful to a broad audience, the Office of the State Historian continues to develop comprehensive educational programming including the New Mexico Digital History Project and Website. The intern will be involved with content development, programming and or design of the New Mexico History Website.

(2) Research and Interpretation: The intern is responsible for conducting comprehensive scholarly and community-based research. This may include conducting oral histories.

(3) Community Outreach: Raising historical and cultural consciousness requires a sensitive and creative approach in introducing complex questions for public thought and debate. The intern will be involved in cultivating relationships and facilitating dialogue among communities and individuals by developing lecture programs, forums, exhibits, and publications.

(4) Heritage preservation: The Office of the State Historian is committed to participate in efforts to preserve the experiences of New Mexicans; their built environment, memories, and, in accord with the agency's mission, their written record. The intern will be involved with one of these preservation issues.

All internships are designed around a specific project of mutual interest to the intern and the Office of the State Historian. Detailed project descriptions are available; please contact the OSH internship office directly for a current list of projects.
