JAMES B. GILCHRIST, merchant and stockraiser, (Dem.) delegate Grant Co.; b. Jan. 17, 1863, Stevens Point. Wis.; s. William H. and Susie E. Gilchrist; educ. Stevens Point, H S.; worked on engineering corps. Penna. on R. R. construction work 5 years; 1886 entered operating dept. U P. Ry.; 1888 asst. supt. U. P. at Denver; 1891: came to N. M. to construct Silver City & Northern Ry. as chief engineer; 1892 entered mining as supt. Graphic mine at Hadley, N. M.; 1892-6 mined in Mexico and Cripple Creek, Colo.; returned to N. M.. 1896, as lessee of copper mines at Santa Rita; 1899 incorporated Gilchrist & Dawson mining and merc. bus., headquarters at  Fierro; 1904 acquired interest in GOS Cattle Co., of which he is treasurer; mem. Elks.
